Southeast Louisiana CouncilActivities & Civic Service

The Activities and Civic Service Committee works to plan and promote non-camping activities and community service opportunities for Scouting units in the Southeast Louisiana Council.

Some examples of activities promoted annually include the Council Pinewood Derby Championships and the Ten Commandments Hike.

The Activities and Civic Service Committee is always looking for projects throughout our  communities that we can involve Scouts! Our most recent project is Scouting for Food which benefitted Second Harvest Food Bank. If you have a project that would be great for Scouts to be involved, contact our Committee Chair, Ms. Skip by email at unit131.thegoodgang@gmail.com.

Scouting Anniversary

The Boy Scouts of America designates the Sunday that falls before February 8 (Scouting Anniversary Day) as Scout Sunday, which is the primary date to recognize the contributions of young people and adults to Scouting.  However, each chartered organization can use either of two other options to celebrate this special day. An organization can adopt a specific Sunday to celebrate. In the instance of the United Methodist Church, Scout Sunday is celebrated on the second Sunday in February. It also is permissible for a local church to celebrate on the Sunday most acceptable to the pastor and congregation.

Scouting for Food

Scouting for Food takes place on two consecutive weekends. On the first weekend, Scouts can distribute bags and/or door hangers to let their neighbors know about the drive. On the second, Scouts can revisit those houses to pick up bags full of canned food, cereal, pasta, peanut butter, juice and other nonperishable items and take them to a drop off site. Or, Scouts can contact local businesses to provide a collection area to provide a collection area during the first week and Scouts can return on  a later date to retrieve those items. Or, after getting permission, Scouts can set up in front of a local grocery, supermarket to collect items. Collection truck[s] will be available upon prior request.

The food is delivered to food pantries throughout our council.
