New Safeguarding Youth Training Launches to Strengthen Youth Protection

Scouting America has officially launched an updated and enhanced Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) program—part of its unwavering commitment to maintaining the safest possible environment for young people across the country.

This updated training represents a major step forward in Scouting America’s multi-layered approach to youth protection, and is now mandatory for all registered adult volunteers. Developed in collaboration with leading experts in child safety, law enforcement, and child psychology, the new training goes beyond the previous Youth Protection Training by offering a broader and more comprehensive focus on the well-being of youth.

Key Enhancements:

  • ?? Comprehensive Protection: Formerly known as Youth Protection Training, the new Safeguarding Youth Training expands to include strategies for preventing emotional, physical, and sexual abuse.
  • ?? Inclusive, Expert-Backed Content: Volunteers will learn about a wide range of topics and best practices, informed by the latest research and input from top child safety professionals.
  • ?? Annual Refresher Required: Starting in 2026, volunteers will complete an annual 15–20 minute refresher course to keep safeguarding knowledge current and top of mind.
  • ? Alignment with National Best Practices: Training content is continually reviewed and updated to reflect the most effective youth protection strategies available.
  • ??? Focus on Prevention: Emphasizes creating a culture of safety and empowering volunteers to take proactive steps to protect youth.

Important Update for Volunteers:

Your current Youth Protection Training remains valid through May 31, 2026. After that, you must complete the new Safeguarding Youth Training to remain compliant with Scouting America’s updated standards.

This new training reinforces Scouting America’s promise to provide a safe, inclusive, and enriching environment where young people can learn, lead, and thrive. By participating in this updated program, you are helping to ensure the Southeast Louisiana Council continues to set the standard in youth protection.
